Oral presentation has always been a part of history and tradition. Stories are told through the generations so we do not forget. The Riverwood Poetry Festival and the Charter Oak Cultural Center , in collaboration with One Word CT are excited to announce this generational poetry slam between members of past CT adult national poetry slam teams and current members of the CT National Youth Slam Team 2009.

The PIPS
Hosted by: Christine Beck

Partners in Poetry, also known as the PIPs, is a West Hartford-based poetry critique group that has been meeting every other week for the past nine years. The PIPs are composed of Christine Beck, Sherri Bedingfield, Ginny Lowe Connors, Tere Foley, Patricia Hale, Bob Jacob, Nancy Kerrigan, and Elaine Zimmerman.

“Everybody Says Hello” is an anthology of poetry composed by the PIPs.  It is organized into three sections: “A Roundness of Remembering,” about memory and the past, “Ways to Disappear,” about loss and grief, and “What Holds Us Up,” about faith and wholeness. The PIPs read from their book, alternating voices and poems from each section.

Three members – Ginny Lowe Connors who is reading with the Antrim poets at the festival, Bob Jacob, and Nancy Kerrigan, have published books of poetry. Other members have published widely in journals and received awards for their work. Christine Beck and Ginny Lowe Connors are active in the Connecticut Poetry Society.

“Everybody Says Hello” reflects the love and support that each Partner in Poetry has lavished on the work of his or her fellow poets. The gift of reading aloud the words of our creative spirits to those who truly listen and help us to be the best poets we can be is of immeasurable value.

Other PIPs reading tonight will be Sherri Bedingfield, Tere Foley, Pat Hale and Elaine Zimmerman.

Dennis Barone, who teaches at St. Joseph's College, has been widely published and involved in the production of many publications and was recently named Poet Laureate of West Hartford. Susan Kinsolving has published several books of poetry, including Dailies & Rushes, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Dana Sonnenschein, a literature and writing professor at Southern Connecticut State University, has published two chapbooks and one full-length book of poems, and has an upcoming book, Bear Country, which was awarded the NFSPS Stevens Prize. Marilyn E. Johnston, whose poems have received 5 Pushcart nominations, has published a chapbook, Against Disappearance, which was a finalist for the 2001 Redgreene Press Poetry Prize, and has a new book, Silk Fist Songs, published by Antrim House. Artemis Rising

Artemis Rising is a Connecticut-based poetry circle of accomplished, electric, powerful, vibrant and bountiful women writers. The group formed in 1997 when a few of us had been seeking a serious writers' group. We wanted to develop our own voices in the company of other women. We also wanted to be part of a group that would be supportive in an emotional sense, that would share life experience as well as poetry, and poetry information. The group provides a strong, supportive community to each member, and we wish you as much success and community spirit in your own group(s) as we experience in Artemis Rising.  Featuring Eileen Abrizio, Priscilla Herrington, Suzy Lamson, Mary Elizabeth Lang, Suzanne Niedzielska, Paula Panzarella, Victoria Rivas and Linda Yuhas.
