artemis rising - the history

The History of Artemis Rising

Artemis Rising is a Connecticut-based poetry circle of accomplished, electric, powerful, vibrant and bountiful women writers. The group formed in 1997 when a few of us had been seeking a serious writers' group. We wanted to develop our own voices in the company of other women. We also wanted to be part of a group that would be supportive in an emotional sense, that would share life experience as well as poetry, and poetry information.

Priscilla Herrington approached Victoria Rivas, Suzy Lamson, and former member Mar Walker, all of whom shared this vision. They came up with the format of a three hour meeting, the first hour being for socialization, "bonding," catching up on whatever and then two hours of solid work, critiquing each other's work. One more member, Faith Vicinanza, was invited to the first meeting, the five met and the as yet unnamed group was formed.

We quickly grew to nine members. Four of our original members, Faith Vicinanza, Elizabeth Thomas, Kate Thomas, adn Mar Walker, have subsequently left. Our membership currently consists of twelve women, and though we get regular requests from interested poets, we maintain a maximum membership of twelve to support the dynamics of this community of women, and the intensity of the work we do together. We have provided, and continue to provide, guidance to those who wish to develop a group in the likeness of Artemis Rising.

The group provides a strong, supportive community to each member, and we wish you as much success and community spirit in your own group(s) as we experience in Artemis Rising.
